GL040 Inventing Flight

I wrote this to work on my woodwind writing technique. I always feel like I under-use them when writing orchestral work.

For this piece, I imagined what it would be like discovering flight for the first time. This could be either the Wright Brothers designing and flying their first successful plane, or perhaps an animated character discovering they can ride a broom or hang on to the back of a dragon. The woodwinds are used to create swirls of wind and gusts as the horns and strings mimic the sense of gliding on top of the airy turbulence. I tried to capture a sense of thrill and joy while underlying some nervous energy and a light sense of unease.

This track is available for scoring, and also acts as a demo of some of my stylistic capabilities. If you'd like to commission custom work, please get in touch. I'm always interested in new projects.
