GL008 Cardboard Castles (Let’s Build a Fort)

I really like the way this one turned out. I’d set out to do something a little cutesy and innocent. As I was writing the initial melody, though, I started imagining a story about two best friends building a rocket ship out of cardboard and blasting off into imaginary outer space. I know the title references castles, not rockets, but alliteration makes for nicer names. Do you agree?

Initially I really wanted to establish a repeating harmonic progression and just stick with that the entire time (something that I feel works much better for this loop-type work), but once the story was set in my mind I couldn’t help but get a little dramatic. As always, it was a bit of a challenge trying to bring it back home again, but I think it works.

GL007 Spy Theme Excerpt 01

This track isn’t really a loop. I wrote it just after purchasing the Broadway Big Band instrument library and wanted to learn how to use the software. I have an ongoing love affair with all things Archer/Venture Bros and wanted to do some “spy music”. This ended up being a bit too bombastic to really be effective in a spy context, but I liked the bluesy saxophone melody harmonized in concerted rhythms. That said, this is titled “Excerpt” as the melody really should be developed further and permutated to make this a full fledged track. Unfortunately I lost steam between dusting off my jazz chops and learning the new software (both of which make doing ANY writing a huge amount of work) and it’s unlikely I’ll do any more work on this particular excerpt. I’ll probably end up stealing bits of this for future works, though. Time will tell.

This was a first try and I’m not 100% in love with the production, but we all have to start somewhere. I hope to do more of this type of stuff in the future. If you’re working on an animation (or video game for that matter) that is anything like Archer or Venture Bros, by all means get in touch. Working on a gig like that would fulfill all sorts of dreams.

No loop files are provided with this one as it’s not really a loop. I’ve provided a direct download in the event that I reach my max on Soundcloud, though. If you would like to use this royalty free track, please message me.

GL006 SNES Victory

This track was created for a game called Corgi Run. They wanted an upbeat track for the stats screen that would display when you successfully completed a level. They really wanted to use the 16-bit sound world exemplified in classic Super Nintendo gamesof the 90’s. As it turns out, it’s pretty difficult to emulate this sound using modern tools. It was a good exercise in sound design to make the instruments sound “more realistic” than classic 8bit, but not good enough to sound real.

GL005 Fragile Dancer Duo

I wanted to do something light and pretty with some unexpected harmonic twists. The use of chromatically related chords took me pretty far away from my key center, but I was able to get back home using a neopolitan pre-dominant. I cheated it a little as it wasn’t quite set up properly, but I sort of like the dissonance it creates. I titled this “Duo” as I’m working on a fully orchestrated version of this piece as well.

This feels nostalgic, music box-y, waltz-y (without being in 3), and reminds me of heavy snow by moonlight.

GL004 Launch

This was created as an exercise. I was testing data flow using a secondary computer as an instrument server to offload some of the work from my primary rig. It worked out pretty well, though more experimentation is necessary. The music is obviously heavily inspired by minimalism.
